Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine Could Affect Normal Thyroid Function

A team of researchers from Greece sought to run two studies, the first comparing the impact of COVID-19 vaccination (Pfizer-BioNTech&rsquo;s BNT 162b2 mRNA vaccine) on immune response or &ldquo;the kinetics of neutralizing antibodies (Nabs) on patients with autoimmune thyroiditis and controls, and the second to investigate what is the impact on the thyroid function of healthy persons before and after vaccination with BNT162b2.&nbsp;Working out of one of Greece&rsquo;s most prominent academic medical centers, the study investigators report that BNT162b2 may affect the healthy person&rsquo;s thyroid function.
The authors of this study are affiliated with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the Medicine, Pharmacy, Clinical Therapeutics, Cell Biology, and Biophysics Departments, as well as Alexandra Hospital. An integral part of Greece&rsquo;s academic and intellectual tradition, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is one of Europe&rsquo;s largest universities, with over 69,000 students. The authors had their results published in the peer-reviewed Frontiers in Endocrinology in February of this year.
